We guide mission-driven organizations in making information visual, persuasive and shareable. Starting with an in-depth discovery process, we build websites and interactive applications, and produce data visualization and information graphics, motion graphic videos and data analysis. Our team specializes in open source solutions including Drupal, WordPress, and Angular.

Nathaniel Pearlman  President
Nathaniel Pearlman has been visualizing data for more than two decades; his interest goes back as far as his first statistics class with Edward Tufte in 1988. Nathaniel majored in computer science at Yale and he finished all but his dissertation in MIT’s political science doctoral program. Outside of academics, Nathaniel is an experienced entrepreneur. He founded NGP Software, Inc. in 1997 (now NGP VAN, Inc.) to join his interests in politics and technology and grew that company into the market leader in fundraising and compliance software for progressive political campaigns. Nathaniel served as Chief Technology Officer for the Hillary Clinton for President campaign in 2007-8. In 2009, Nathaniel founded the information graphic products company Timeplots and reserved the name GRAPHICACY for information graphics consulting and services. Together, Timeplots and Graphicacy are dedicated to making the visual display of information more comprehensible and aesthetic.

Jeff Osborn Creative Director
Jeffrey Osborn  Creative Director

Jeffrey has worked for more than three decades as an art director and graphic designer. In addition to his role as Creative Director at Graphicacy, he has served as the Deputy Director of Art at National Geographic Magazine (Washington, DC) and Design Director at Cole & Weber, an Ogilvy & Mather affiliate advertising agency (Seattle, WA.) His work experience includes visual journalism, information graphics design and interactive data visualization, art direction of traditional illustration as well as 2D, and fully rigged 3D model, animation, and a full spectrum of print design projects. Clients previous to Jeffrey’s tenure at Graphicacy include National Geographic, Nikkei National Geographic (Japan), Scientific American, Society for Science & the Public, Intellectual Ventures, The Pew Charitable Trusts, World Resources Institute, Boeing, Weyerhaeuser, Apple and Westin Hotels. Teaching assignments have included design courses at the Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts and a visual journalism class for students participating in a summer program at Johns Hopkins University. Specific areas of interest include the intersection of art and science, and intercultural communication.

Chris Lanoue  Director of Engineering and Innovation
Chris is a Creative Technologist and Data Visualization Engineer with over a decade of experience. Most recently, Chris led the data visualization team for the Fintech startup Kabbage, and prior to that he led data visualization engineering teams within both the Digital Innovation Lab and Center for Machine Learning organizations at Capital One. Chris holds multiple patents for his work on data visualization within augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in the Digital Innovation Lab. These patents are evidence of his innovative approaches to visualizing complex data in multi-dimensions. Before returning to the corporate world, and after receiving a masters degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Illinois, Chris left an Agricultural Economics PhD at Cornell University to found and run an agricultural-centric data visualization and design consultancy, Nautilytics, with clients such as USAID, USDA, Biogen, and Purina. Chris’s areas of expertise include data science, engineering and deploying full stack applications across cutting edge technology stacks and all cloud platforms. He is equally comfortable leading a rapid development team building out an interactive data visualization prototype or leading and building a production application at scale to thousands of concurrent users.

Josh Nerpel  Director of Operations

Josh has more than a decade of nonprofit and for-profit management, operations and Democratic political experience. Most recently he was the founding Chief Operations Officer of True Blue Media. During this time, he also served as the company’s Director of Outreach, building partnerships with the leading progressive organizations, Democratic campaigns and congressional offices. Before joining the team at True Blue Media, he served as the executive director and COO of the PeaceWorks Foundation and OneVoice, leading a team across four countries to implement data-driven organizing, digital campaigning and economic development to Israel and Palestine, in support of a two-state solution. Prior to OneVoice he held the position of Director of Operations for Securing America’s Future Energy and the Electrification Coalition.

His political experience includes national advance and overseeing visual communications for the White House for President Obama and Vice President Biden and the campaigns of Secretary Clinton and Senator Joe Lieberman.

Eduardo Velez  Lead Data Visualization Engineer
Eduardo has a decade of experience with interactive web development and data visualization. He has a thoughtful and measured approach to front-end development with an appreciation of clean, fresh and stimulating visual aesthetics where form follows function. Focused on JavaScript frameworks, Eduardo has worked for a variety of clients including Harvard Business School, the National Basketball Association, the United Nations and Twitter. His education includes a BFA in Visual Communications Design from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. In his spare time, Eduardo likes to explore urban environments (usually on a bike.)

Shing-Yun Chiang Information Designer
As an information designer, Shing-Yun works with data directly and creates visualizations that better convey insights. Shing-Yun has experience in visualizing data through various approaches, including static graphics, interactive web applications and 3D physical artifacts. She has interned at Thomson Reuters Labs and Graphicacy. Before getting into the world of data visualization, Shing-Yun worked as a journalist and assistant editor for two years. She received an MFA in Information Design and Visualization from Northeastern University at Boston and a BA in Journalism from National Chengchi University, Taiwan.

Carni Klirs Senior Information Designer
Carni Klirs is a designer with over a decade of experience translating complex topics into compelling, visually driven stories. With a strong foundation in print design and typographic principles, he brings a sharp eye to any project. Previously, Carni spent 5 years as senior designer at World Resources Institute, an environmental research non-profit. While at WRI, he developed a passion for data visualization and information design. He has also worked at Free Range Studios, working on design projects for a variety of progressive clients. Carni received his Master’s degree in Information Visualization from Maryland Institute College of Art, and his B.A. in Graphic Design from American University.

Ryan Cooper Account Manager
Ryan Cooper is a graduate with honors of The George Washington University where he studied international affairs, producing noteworthy scholarship on the rights of women and the transnational LGBTQ+ community. Attracted to the power of data and visual storytelling, and inspired by their potential to make the world a better place, Ryan worked most recently at Tableau, a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader in the business intelligence and data visualization space. There, in addition to being named a Tableau Desktop Certified Associate and Tableau Doctor, Ryan helped advance the data strategies of some of the top health systems in the country, along with hundreds of other customers up and down the east coast. With one eye always on some dashboard or another, Ryan developed a passion for visual best practices, making analytics intuitive for everyone, and helping all his customers turn data into dollars. Ryan’s chief focus as an Account Manager is to help our customers think critically about the role of data in their organizations and quantify the business value of their data projects to ensure maximum return on investment.

Rui Jiang Front End Engineer and UX Designer
Rui is a frontend engineer and designer based in Boston. He specializes in developing enterprise SaaS applications and data visualizations with a focus on human-centric UI and intuitive workflows. He has previously worked on projects for the USDA (NASS Division), Intel and Boston-based startup Yesware. In his spare time, he runs Cacher (www.cacher.io), a code snippet organizer for developers with over 20,000 users. Rui received his BS in Computer Science from Northwestern University.
Jeejung Kim
Jeejung Kim Motion Graphics Designer and Animator
Jeejung, originally from South Korea, is an animator now based in Brooklyn, NY. Specializing in the creation of data-driven motion graphics, she has worked with Netflix, Bloomberg Media, TED, Vox Media, Noisy Neighbor productions and other studios. Jeejung is a self-taught animator who holds an MFA degree in traditional 3D medium/art installation. During her spare time, she creates short animation pieces inspired by a variety of topics including animal rights, meditation, and the life of plants. She enjoys combining literal and abstract expressions in her art.

Joshua Korenblat  Art Director
Working closely with the core team in Washington, DC, Joshua Korenblat is part of our Graphicacy team in New York. Since its founding in 2012, Joshua has been an Art Director at Graphicacy, working with clients and helping to make Timeplots posters. At present, Joshua is also an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the State University of New York at New Paltz, about seventy-five miles north of New York City, in the scenic and historic Hudson River Valley. At SUNY New Paltz, Joshua teaches Data Visualization, Information Design, and Illustration. In research and practice, Joshua focuses on how we manifest knowledge visually. Like writers, graphic designers can communicate at the interchange of complex ideas and stories. On campus, Joshua is a board member of the Digital Arts, Sciences, and Humanities Lab. As of Fall 2016, Joshua will serve on the Educational Technology Committee as well. From 2007 until 2014, Joshua was on the Graphic Design faculty of the Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts, Washington, DC campus. Joshua worked in the Art Department at National Geographic Magazine for six years at the beginning of his career.
