ABDORRAHMAN BOROUMAND FOUNDATION (ABF)
Human rights awareness
A non-governmental non-profit organization, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Foundation is dedicated to the promotion of human rights and democracy in Iran. With the ABF team, we created an interactive online portal for their unique database of floggings in Iran since 2000.
The interface connects a map of Iran with a chronological grid of icons representing individual Iranians who have been flogged. Details about individuals appear once viewers click on specific icons. Inspired by Slate’s Newtown gun deaths interactive, this human-centered approach seemed like the most appropriate way to tell a story of people and pain.
We kept in mind the importance of individual human beings during the sketching process. We replaced bar charts with human icons, each representing one real person. The large number of people being flogged each year is only truly meaningful when users see the individual: name, gender, age, and sentence.
How much space should the map of Iran occupy? This is a design question we continuously asked ourselves during the process. In the end we decided make the map small and supportive, keeping the main focus on the individual people still being flogged in Iran.
